aperture (symbol D)

The diameter of the main collecting element in a telescope. For an optical telescope, the aperture refers to the diameter of the objective lens or mirror; for a radio telescope it is the physical size of the antenna. The aperture is one of the most important characteristics of a telescope since radiation-gathering capacity and resolving power both increase with the size of aperture.
